A fidget spinner is a toy that consists of a bearing in the center of a multi-lobed flat structure made from metal or plastic designed to spin along its axis with little effort.
Fidget spinners became popular toys in 2017, although similar devices had already been invented as early as 1993. Catherine Hettinger, a chemical engineer by training, was initially credited by some news stories to have been the inventor of the fidget spinner, including by media outlets such as The Guardian, The New York Times, and the New York Post. Hettinger filed a patent application for a “spinning toy” in 1993 and a patent was issued, but Hettinger allowed the patent to lapse in 2005 after she could not find a commercial partner. A May 2017 Bloomberg News article showed that Hettinger was not the inventor of the fidget spinner, and Hettinger agreed. The toy became popular among schoolchildren and consequently some schools banned the spinners for being a distraction, while other schools allowed the toy to be used discreetly.
A basic fidget spinner consists of a two or three pronged design with a bearing in its center circular pad. A person holds the center pad while the toy spins. They are made from various materials including brass, stainless steel, titanium, copper, aluminium, and plastic. The bearings are generally ceramic, metal (stainless steel or chrome), and some are hybrids—such as ceramic balls with stainless races and cages.

Plastic vs. Metal
Talking about from what are they made, let’s talk about metal spinners versus plastic spinners. Do you know the difference? Here are some differences between metal and plastic spinners:
That is not to say, however, that all metal spinners are durable. Bronze and brass dent and scratch easily. That also means they develop a gorgeous patina that some spinner fans love so much. Copper is better and steel and titanium are best for durability. Most metal spinners nowadays use decent quality bearings. Moreover, they have removable bearings, so if something happens to the bearing you can just pop in a new one. That’s a plus for how long the spinner will last.
Plastic spinners that are 3d printed are just not good. They will snap easily and are often not balanced. For well-made molded plastic models, durability can be great. However, well-made plastic models are scarce. That should be clear from the average price for these – often under $10 or even $5 for a fidget spinner. That means the bearings aren’t great and is a good indication that the manufacturer was not particularly concerned with quality control.
Plastic fidget spinners are cheaper as compare to the metal fidget spinners. However, there is no value in them if you compare them to metal spinners.
3.LOOK & FEEL
This is a subjective judgment, but we believe metal looks and feels better than plastic. We’re also pretty confident than anyone who has tried a bunch of hand spinners would agree with this judgment.
On a more objective note, plastic is not often shiny enough to create some of the nice optical illusions you get with metal spinners. Also plastic tends to come in only the one classic tri-spinner design. Metal spinners come in all kinds of cool shapes and sizes.
If tricks are your thing, you may want to go plastic. Obviously metal is harder and can break things like glass or do some damage to a human being if it’s tossed around in the wrong way. Also plastic is cheaper so you can destroy the thing and get another for 5 bucks.
Both plastic and metal can be quiet. But metal tends to be quieter because it is better made – ie the manufacturer puts more time and effort into making a well balanced model. Note that full ceramic bearings will always be louder than other types of bearings regardless of the spinner body material.
And the most important:
Generally speaking, metal spinners are heavier and therefore spin for longer than plastic spinners. It’s possible to have plastic spinners with metal weights that are heavier than aluminum body fidget spinners, but anything made of steel, copper, brass or bronze will spin for a lot longer than plastic (all else equal).
Most plastic models use 608 bearings which are the largest bearings used in fidget spinners. The larger the bearing, the higher the friction and the lower the spin time. Metal spinners increasingly use smaller bearings like the famed R188 which is significantly smaller than the 608 and spins for A LOT longer.
